US - Dennis W. Harms, a founder of Premium Standard Farms and a pioneer in the modern pork industry died unexpectedly last week, aged 56.

Mr Harms, of Hendersonville, Tennessee, had diverse career in the pig business. It included positions at Cargill feed division and Central Soya before he founded Premium Standard Farms (PSF. The business grew to be the US' second largest pig producer and while there Mr Harms saw the company complete a processing facility in 1994 and become a leader of the US industry's vertical integration movement.

He left PSF in 1998 when it was purchased by Continental Grain Company and joined Pig Improvement Company (PIC) as North America president. In 2007 he formed Spectrum Agribusiness, a food and agriculture consulting practice.
