Print This Page Vietnam: Another Case of PRRS
HANOI - PRRS (Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome), otherwise known as "Blue Ear" disease, has hit another Vietnamese province, Bac Lieu province in the south, since the beginning of this month. This has led to the culling of 170 pigs. The disease, breaking out in Vinh Loi district on June 3, has affected the pigs raised by 18 households in the district, according to local veterinary bureaus.
According to reports made by Vietnam's Department of Animal Health under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, PRRS has now hit seven Vietnamese provinces in total, including ThaiBinh and Thai Nguyen in the north, Thua Thien Hue and Lam Dong at the center, and Binh Phuoc and Bac Lieu in the southern region.
PRRS made its debut appearance in the US during the mid '80s and is now present in most pig-producing countries. The symptoms include reproductive failure, pneumonia and increased susceptibility to secondary bacterial infection.
