The association has entered into a three-year marketing agreement with Schlegel Sports to allow use of the name Iowa Chops for its new American Hockey League team in Des Moines. In addition to use of the name, the deal also provides IPPA with additional promotional opportunities.

"By sponsoring the Iowa Chops, the Iowa Pork Producers Association will continue to serve its mission with several different audiences," said IPPA President Dave Moody, a pork producer from Nevada.

"This is a new venture for us and a new era of hockey that come together to present new opportunities to engage consumers."

IPPA believes the agreement will be good for the entire state of Iowa. The marketing and promotional opportunities that the team name represents will only serve to enhance demand for Iowa pork chops and other pork cuts in the top pork producing state in the country.

"We all see this agreement as invaluable," Moody said.

"It's innovative, pulls in new audiences and is an excellent opportunity for us to showcase our product and the pride of those behind it throughout the state."

The Iowa Chop™ has been a registered trademark of the Iowa Pork Producers Association since 1982. A thick, center cut chop was first named the Iowa Chop in the 1970s and national marketing efforts then began with the help of the Iowa Development Commission.

Team officials announced the new name, logo and colors at a news conference in Des Moines July 9. The new logo is a vicious boar's head in the team colors of crimson, grey and black.

The Iowa Chops are affiliated with the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League and will begin play in the AHL in October. All home games will be played at Wells Fargo Arena and IPPA is already planning special game-day promotions throughout the season.
