Pork Pie Sales Hit by "Healthy Eating", Wet Weather

UK - They have long been seen as a quick and tasty snack for anyone on the move.

But pork pies appear to be the latest victim in the fight against obesity, reports the Mail Online, as health-conscious shoppers turn their backs on them in favour of more nutritious options.

Quoting a report by market analysts TNS, Britons are buying fewer pork pies than they did a year ago. with the revenue from sales of the snack slumping 5.6 per cent to £132million.

Chris Lamb, of the British Pig Executive, told The Grocer magazine: "Pork pies are very easily associated with obesity.

"They are suffering as a result of all the health messages."

The decline is also believed to have been caused by the rising price of pork and lower than normal consumption of the meat due to the wet summer.

But Richard Cullen, from consultants AHDBms, said: "A return to a more normal weather pattern this year should see stronger sales."
