Print This Page ACMC Tip: Check Parity Profile
UK - With the increase in cull sow prices, now is a good time to review herd parity profile, says Paul Thompson, veterinary consultant to pig-breeding company, ACMC Ltd.
He advises producers to look at numbers born and — even more importantly — numbers weaned per litter for each parity. A clear drop-off in performance is usually seen after parity 7.
Animals beyond the parity cut-off point for a particular herd will be less productive and pull down the overall herd performance. They should therefore be replaced by gilts. Gilt input should be planned on a regular basis.
