National Herd Forecast to Fall Below 400,000

UK - The United Kingdom breeding herd, which fell to around 425,000 (down 7 percent) between June this year and June 2007, is expected to continue falling to around 400,000 by the end of the year.

According to AHDBMS Economics the breeding herd will probably stabilise next year at around 390,000 head.

Clean pig slaughterings for the final quarter of this year are forecast to be six percent down on the same period last year. Over the year as a whole slaughterings will show a decline of around two percent.

Because the June census showed a smaller decline in the breeding herd than had been forecast (7 percent instead of 10 percent) slaughterings for next year have been revised upwards, but only slightly.

Even taking into account an expected sharp increase in productivity, in part due to BPEXâ€™s PCV2 voucher scheme, slaughterings will still be down four percent compared to this year.
