Abattoirs Forced to Reduce Purchase Prices

SPAIN - A recent EU survey has shown that provisional August 2008 Spanish pig census results indicate a slow-down in the rate of decline in pig numbers, compared with the reduction recorded during the April census.

The sow herd increased by 1 percent between April and August of 2008.

The August census indicates that slaughtering will be well below year-earlier levels during the autumn and winter months.

The latest Spanish slaughtering data for August show a reduction of 16 percent compared to a year earlier.

According to the survey, many pig producers this autumn are still not profitable, inspite of falling feed costs.

The finished pig market has fallen sharply in recent weeks, forcing slaughterhouses to reduce their buying prices.
