GB Production of Bacon and Ham Fell in 2008

UK - The latest national statistics produced by Defra on production of bacon and ham in Great Britain (GB) show that annual output in 2008 was down by more than seven per cent from the 2007 figure. Of the total, 46 per cent was made from imported pig meat.

Fourth Quarter Production

At 44,100 tonnes, production of bacon and ham in the fourth quarter of 2008 continued the upward trend for the year (Table 1). Of the total figure, 46.3 per cent was produced from imported pig meat.

Production in 2008

Total bacon and ham production for 2008 stands at 162,300 tonnes, which was 12,700 tonnes or 7.3 per cent less than in the previous year (Table 2). The percentage of product from imported pig meat was down slightly from 48.2 per cent in 2007 to 46.0 per cent in 2008.
