Seoul to Lift Ban on UK Pork and Poultry

SEOUL - Imports of British poultry and pork are likely to resume as early as mid-February, Korean officials reported on Monday (26 January).

The officials at the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said it recently drew up plans to lift the ban on poultry and pork imports from the United Kingdom, reports The Korea Herald.

Seoul banned British poultry products like chicken and duck in February 2007, following reports of a deadly H5N1 strain of the bird flu detected on a Turkey farm.

An outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in August 2007 drove the Korean government to ban all pork products from the United Kingdom.

According to the Agriculture Ministry, the British government had made a request for a resumption of its meat imports, following its classification as a "clean" nation by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

"As our evaluations confirmed the products to be safe, we decided to resume imports," the ministry said. It expected the ban to be lifted as soon some time next month.
