UK Slaughter Statistics - June 2009

Last month, 647,000 clean pigs were sent for slaughter compared to 834,000 in April (a five-week month) and 700,000 in March.

15,000 sows and boars went for slaughter in May, whereas 20,000 and 16,000 were sent for slaughter in April and March respectively.

The May average slaughter weight for clean pigs remains fairly stable at 77.7 kg in comparison with 77.2 kg in April and 77.8 kg in March. Also, there was a fairly sharp rise in the average dressed weight for sows and boars 149.1 kg compared to 144.2 kg in April and 147.3 kg in March.

In total, the UK produced 55,000 tonnes (a slight drop being noted) of pigmeat in May, compared to 67,000 tonnes in April, 57,000 tonnes in March and 55,000 tonnes in February.
