Print This Page Meat Production Shifts Away from Mutton and Pigs
AUSTRALIA - Australian farmers are producing less mutton and pig meat.According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, since May 2008, mutton production dropped 14 per cent, and pig meat dropped nine per cent to just 27,000 tonnes.
Over the same period, there was a big drop in the number of cattle and sheep slaughtered, reports ABC.
Sheep slaughterings are down 11 per cent, and cattle are down four per cent.
Beef production rose three per cent, and lamb production remained stable at 36,000 tonnes.
Lamb slaughterings dropped one percent, and pig slaughterings remained steady at 373,000.
