Environmentally-friendly Pig Abattoir Assured
MALAYSIA - Kedah Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak, on Saturday gave assurance that the pig abattoir that will be built in the state would be environmentally friendly to ensure that its surroundings were not polluted and caused problems for nearby residents. He said his staff had been informed about the site for an abattoir in Sungai Toh Pawang in Bedong as proposed by the Kedah Pork Traders and Slaughters Association.
"I have come to understand that the place is private property on a hill, removed from residential areas and already has small-scale pig-rearing activity.
"One condition we have set is that the place have zero discharge. So they have to ensure no discharge like into rivers," he told reporters here.
The proposal was made to replace the abattoir that was demolished by the Alor Setar Municipal Council at Kampung Berjaya in Alor Setar recently, according to Bernama.
Mr Azizan said for now his side left it to the Environment Department, the Veterinary Department and local government bodies to do a study before approval was granted for the abattoir in the area.
