New Temporary Site For Labuan's Pork Sellers
MALAYSIA - The seven-month impasse on the location of a suitable place to sell pork in Labuan has been resolved, with all six pork sellers here unanimously agreeing to a new temporary site identified by the Labuan Corporation (LC), it was announced today.Bernama.com reports that the temporary site is adjacent to the state fisheries department's jetty and will be used by the sellers while awaiting completion of a RM27 million new market project.
Labuan MCA chief Chin Hon Vui told Bernama that following his recent meeting with the pork sellers, LC's newly-appointed chairman Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talip, and Member of Parliament Datuk Yussof Mahal, who is also LC deputy chairman, it was agreed that the temporary pork market would be built soon.
On 1 January, this year, LC's enforcement unit sealed the previous pork market in town, forcing the pork sellers, who had been doing business for almost 30 years, to cease their business activity at the market.
Since then, they had been selling pork on a privately-owned open site in down town.
The pork sellers had disagreed with a LC directive to move them to a new RM1.2 million facility at Kampung Sungai Keling, describing the move as isolating them from consumers in town.
Mr Chin said Labuan had more than 11,000 inhabitants of Chinese descent.
"Consumption of pork in Labuan is about 1.5 tonnes daily," he said, adding that he was glad that the pork sellers finally had a place to sell their meat, following the government's assistance.
Meanwhile, Mr Yussof said the government was sensitive towards the needs of the people, regardless of race or religion.
However, he said, the sensitivities of Muslims should also be taken into consideration.
