Pork Trade Resumes After Easing H1N1 Fears

AUSTRALIA - Australian pork sales are back to normal, with the easing of H1N1 flu fears.

Australia's ABC reports that the United States will also again start exporting pork to China, after H1N1 flu restrictions were lifted.

US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says trade in US pork products and live pigs will resume, based on scientific grounds.

Andrew Spencer, from Australian Pork Limited, says the H1N1 flu didn't affect any of Australia's international trade deals, and domestic sales have also recovered from flu hysteria.

"There was a slight blip [in sales] when the first words of swine flu came around at the end of April, and there was another blip when our first piggery in Australia was diagnosed to have the disease," he says.

"By the second piggery, everyone seemed to be used to it by then, and I believe over a few weeks, consumption came back to normal levels."
