According to ABC, the study funded by Australian Pork Limited followed 140 obese people who substituted pork for other meats on a regular basis.

The University of South Australia's nutritional researcher Professor Peter Howe says over a six-month period, participants were asked to eat seven serves of pork a week.

He says research shows participants not only didn't put on weight; they actually lost weight.

"There was significant loss in men of abdominal fat which responded in a reduction in waist circumference of about two centimetres compared to the controlled group," she says.

"This is equivalent to pulling in your belt about one hole tighter."
