Homes in North Carolina to Get Pig-Power

30 September 2010

NORTH CAROLINA, US - The state's utilities are buying pig manure to produce power.

North Carolina's two largest electric utilities are lining up green power from methane gas that has long gone to waste, according to Charlotte Observer.

Duke Energy is testing a generating system at a 9,000-head hog farm in Boonville, about 70 miles north of Charlotte. Methane gas captured from barn wastewater will fuel a small turbine that should generate enough electricity to supply about 50 homes.
