Doubts Over Partial Stalls Ban

31 March 2011

National Pig Association - The voice of the UK pig industry

UK - If any European Union country has difficulty complying with the January 2013 partial stalls ban, then the British pig industry should press for imports of pigmeat from that country to be banned, it was suggested at last night's NPA south-central regional meeting.

But producer Mike Sheldon was not convinced the opportunity to pursue this course of action would arise.

"If the European Commission is faced with the prospect of empty shelves then it will find it very hard to resist introducing a derogation," he said.

He pointed out that if the Commission did introduce a derogation, then the United Kingdom government would not legally be able to impose a ban on pigmeat from countries still using stalls, "because under the derogation they would be compliant with European law".
