Police in Nanling County received reports from residents that there was an illegal factory producing and selling inferior lard in Longtan Village.

The factory was raided and its owner, surnamed Wang, surrendered to police the next day. His wife, surnamed Xu, was apprehended later.

Police claim the two bought waste pork from slaughterhouses and processed it into inferior lard without sanitary facilities.

According to ShanghaiDaily.com, it has also been alleged Mr Wang bought waste oil and sold it to restaurants and hotels after a simple filtering process.

A villager surnamed Zhu, who worked for mr Wang, claimed the factory had since March sold about 10 tons of inferior oil and lard - more than 100 kilograms a day.

Three restaurant owners have allegedly admitted they bought and used Wang's inferior fat.

Police said Mr Wang's illegal profit reached about 200,000 yuan.
