Mr Sercombe, a tenant farmer from near Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, replaces Alistair Mackintosh who has stepped down after six years.

The board also voted for a new vice chairman, bringing in Bill Mellor, from Cheshire.

Mr Sercombe said: “I am delighted to have been elected chairman of the NFU’s national livestock board and I very much look forward to building on the work done by my predecessor.

“I aim to be open, inclusive and encourage debate within the livestock sector as well as strengthening relationships across the supply chain. I also believe it’s important to improve our communication, especially through social media, to encourage the next generation of farmers to become more involved.

“The livestock board now has a number of new faces and this, together with the experienced members, means we have a strong mix going forward to look at some of the big challenges that face us currently such as CAP reform, bTB, sheep EID and animal health and welfare.“

In the coming weeks, the NFU will be advertising for an additional four livestock board ‘appointees’ who will complement the skills and expertise of the eight existing regionally elected board members. Any member who would like to add to the work of the board is encouraged to apply.
