Pork Producers Come to Terms with Welfare Changes23 May 2012
TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA - After five years of policy changes, Tasmanian pork producers say they now have the surety they need.
ABC reports that last week, the State Government brought forward the phase out of sow stalls in the Tasmanian industry to mid-2013, four years sooner than had been expected.
The industry has been offered $500,000 to help it meet that target.
Secretary of the Tasmanian Island Pork Alliance, Malcolm Cowan, says uncertainty caused by numerous changes in policy and deadlines had left a cloud hanging over the industry.
He says with policy certainty, growers now have the confidence they need to invest in the industry.
"We'd already lost one major producer who'd decided he wasn't going to be able to meet the longer standards by 2017 and he withdrew from the industry," Mr Cowan said.
"That was a significant loss. Now we have that surety."
Mr Cowan says the new Tasmanian policy is in line with the national voluntary code of practice.
