Changes to Brazilian Import Guidelines

29 November 2012

BRAZIL - To intensify control the entry of live pigs in Brazil, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) will reform and adapt the quarantine station on the Map Island Cananéia-SP (EQC).

The expectation is that the local animals to be approved pass from March 2013, which will provide a strengthened control of animals combined with the reduction of quarantine.

According to the director of the Department of Animal Health (DSA), Guilherme Marques, the map leverages the expertise of the sectors involved to welcome these animals the best possible way.

Also according to Guilherme Marques, the project meets the government's interest in shielding the pig, from the point of view of economic and social development, in view of the amount of jobs that are generated by the activity.

"This way we will be able to control the full import process in a more effective and reduce the time in which this occurs quarantine," said Mr Marques, who believes the isolation period shall fall by half, reaching on average one month amid the duration of the quarantine.

In Cananéia quarantine station, the animals will be supervised full-time, allowing greater control of animals and examinations to prevent the introduction of exotic diseases to the national squad.

Also according to the director, the reform will transform the station into a major center for quarantine and research, which can facilitate the import and export of pigs to markets of strategic interest to Brazil.

"With this, we can have quick responses to all questions, which by chance may exist related to these transactions such as health outcomes, diagnosis and assurances that involve the whole process," explained Mr Marques.
