Ministry Completes Final Draft for Quality Standard of Iberian Ham28 January 2013
SPAIN - The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment has completed the final draft for the standard quality of Iberian products, with an understanding of the various existing production models, which had been revised in constant dialogue over the last few months.
The new quality standard contains a firm commitment to improving consumer information so they can decide on what kind of product they are interested in purchasing.
The Ministry has sought to simplify the rule and strengthen control systems, ensuring the conservation of the Iberian breed, and also making sure that producers avoid new economic investments and conform to the standards.
The Ministry has made a request for modifications of the existing standard of quality. The revised standards recognize the problems faced by the sector and facilitates new development opportunities and sustainability in the coming years.
An argument has been made for a strong commitment to improving consumer information on the nature and condition of the product marketed.
Highlights of the new standard
After receiving numerous comments and suggestions from various industry bodies, and after studying and considering many of them, the Ministry has submitted the final draft of the standard which includes the following:
- Reduction of the sales, depending on feeding and management
- Sales and mention of the percentage of Iberian labelling must be incorporated in the same visual field as the trademark.
- Avoidance of consumer confusion through misleading logos, trademarks, images, symbols and optional descriptions.
The ministry has ensured the conservation of the Iberian pig through better control of genetic breeding.
