Beijing Cracks Down on Food Supply for Upcoming Spring Festival

28 January 2013

CHINA - The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Agriculture announced that daily consumption of pork, milk and eggs in Beijing has reached 1,500, 2,500 and 500 tons, respectively, due to the upcoming Spring Festival.

To meet the surging consumption and ensure the quality of poultry, Beijing has formed industrial-scale poultry production with standardized management.

Basic infrastructures including ventilation and lighting in livestock farms in Beijing have been improved. In addition, many enterprises are equipped with advanced technology.

As of now, there are 2,176 livestock farms in Beijing that meet standardized management requirements set by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Agriculture. Products from these farms account for 75, 95, 90 and 75 per cent of live pigs, cows, laying hens and poultry in Beijing’s food market, respectively.

Meanwhile, 48 manufacturing bases of leading enterprises for large-scale livestock raising have been established in other provinces, including Hebei, Liaoning, Jilin, Sichuan and Shanxi. The number will reach 169 within five years, at which point 90 per cent of poultry, milk and eggs in Beijing will be produced by other provinces.

To ensure quality of meat, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Agriculture has imposed severe regulations on the use of veterinary medicine and fodder in livestock. Beijing has strengthened inspection and quarantine at 27 road junctions where animal derived food are delivered into the Beijing market.
