Ladies in Pigs Promote Healthy Pork to Schoolchildren

UK - Over 30,000 copies of the Asda-sponsored Ladies in Pigs "Pig Issue" children's pack were handed out last year. The pack features a comic-type activity book aimed at primary school children and includes facts about healthy eating, which is now part of the school curriculum.

Ladies in Pigs also distributed over 30,000 of their own recipe leaflets, bearing the Red Tractor logo. Members carried out nearly 500 demonstrations, in which they promoted the versatility of British pork, bacon, ham and sausages.

These included attendance at country shows, visits to schools, career events, farmers markets and farm shops, along with sausage and pie judging, and talks to various organisations.

Ladies in Pigs have been concentrating their activities in urban areas — something that has become a deliberate policy and will continue, says chairman Sue Woodall.

For 2013, Ladies in Pigs will be offering tasters of their new recipes at a range of shows around the country. "All we ask is that consumers look for the Red Tractor logo when they buy their products," said Sue Woodall.

"The logo is shoppers' guarantee of a high standard at every step, from the farm to the supermarket shelf. It's the only way they can know it is definitely a quality British cut of meat".

Winner of the 2012 "Pig Issue" colouring competition was nine-year-old Alfie Patton from South Kirkby, South Yorkshire, who beat of stiff competition from all around the country to win a digital camera.
