Pork Prices Rise in Western Visayas as Supply Falls

18 April 2013

PHILIPPINES - High pork prices are being experienced in Western Visayas due to a low supply of pork.

High feed prices have turned many local backyard pig farmers, who accounted for 80-89 per cent, away from production, reports Daily Star.

Western Visayas is the third biggest source of pigs in the country, a 179 per cent sufficient level supply for its six provinces.

To reverse the trend, the Department of Agriculture in Region 6 has set up programmes aimed at persuading former farmers to begin again, Johnny Loces, chief of the livestock sector of the Department of Agriculture in Region 6, told the newspaper.
