The meeting comes before a trade mission to Asia in June. Mr Martinez detailed plans to promote Mexican pork to buyers in China, Japan and Korea.

Such talks, he added, would benefit from official recognition that Mexico was free of swine fever which is currently open to discussion with the US government.

Pork meat quality is also to receive a funding boost worth $350 million which was discussed by CNPP President, José Luis Caram Inclan. The money is to fund Federal Inspection and necessary infrastructure.

A draft of the proposal has been presented before the National Advisory Committee of Agrifood.

Similar policy discussions have been ongoing between Mr Martinez and US Agriculture Minister, Tom Vislack to guide food production in both of the countries.

The talks, which have been fully enodorsed by both parties, have focused on food safety issues and several specific problems regarding import restrictions and labelling.

Tuna imports, dolphin friendly labels, Country of Origin Labelling (COOL) and tomato dumping have been debated.
