EPP-Congress 2013: Quality Pays in a Globalised World13 June 2013
EU - From 28-31 May, over 300 participants from 18 countries came together in eastern Jutland, Denmark for the annual meeting of the European Pig Producers club (EPP). The gathering had a strong international attendance; even participants from Asia participated in order to discuss the actual situation on the pig sector.
Within his opening speech EPP President Erik Thijssen mentioned that Denmark is one of Europe’s leading countries in pig production. The biggest advantage in the past was the Danish SPF system with high health animals. But within a dynamic pig sector the situation changed under pressure of environmental rules and lower meat prices. More and more producers started to export piglets e.g. to Germany and nowadays breeding stock and knowledge “made in Denmark” is requested in whole Europe.
For exporting countries, quality is more than ever an important issue. Well known Danish Experts explained how this approach could be reached under current framework conditions. A view from another business sector offered Vice President of Corporate Quality for Lego, Cornelius Versluis. He explained how the global toy company turned its business around after two years of losses around a decade ago.
The optimal mix of lectures, farm visits and company visits, added with some social activities was once more the guarantee for an interesting, informative and successful Congress.
The next EPP Congress will be held for the first time in Parma, Italy, 22-25 May 2014.
