African Swine Fever Found in Belarus

24 June 2013

BELARUS – A herd of 16 pigs has been wiped out in the Grodno region of Belarus following a new outbreak of African Swine Fever, believed to originate from pig feed.

Official confirmation of a new outbreak of the disease in the Lelyukinskiy district of Ivye, was achieved at the National Veterinary Centre in Belarus through polymerase chain reaction testing.

One pig initially caught the disease but to avoid further spreading in the region, animal health technicians destroyed the remaining 15 pigs in the herd.

The holding, at the village of Chapun, has been disinfected and all movement of pigs in Belarus halted as part of a raft of measures installed to limit disease spread.
