Mexico Promotes Sustained Growth of Livestock09 July 2013
MEXICO - Mexico's livestock production will be strong and sustainable and will be positioned among the top ranking pig-producing countries, according to the general coordinator of SAGARPA, Francisco José Gurria Treviño.
Mr Treviño said that SAGARPA is currently working on modifying the guidelines for short-term programmes for the development of the productive potential of the livestock sector.
Addressing members of the Mexican Council for Sustainable Rural Development (CMDRS), Mr Treviño said the goal is to increase pork production for domestic consumption and for export by at least 40 to 50 per cent.
He noted that the agency is evaluating a project to strengthen farming in the humid tropics of Mexico, which is generous in forages and currently generates 13.1 per cent of the total national value, representing a significant growth potential, for the benefit of producers in the region.
