Residents Complain over Smithfield Pig Farms

10 July 2013

US - Nearly 600 residents in North Carolina are taking action against Smithfield Foods over concerns about pollution, smell and flies from the company’s pig farm.

A total of 588 farm nuisance complaints have been filed with Wake County Courthouse, according to a report in News Observer.

The residents are complaining about the storage of pig waste in slurry lagoons and the spraying of the liquid manure on the land.

The report says that the North Carolina General Assembly is to consider changes in the law governing nuisance complaints.

The filing of the complains last week means that the complainants and Smithfield will enter a mediation process. If that fails, the complainants will file full-blown lawsuits.
