Weekly Increase in PED-Positive Submissions Steady

05 September 2013

US - The total number of swine accessions and diagnostic case submissions testing positive for the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) virus is now 553, according the latest figures from the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV) dated 4 September.

By farm class, this figure breaks down as follows since the week of 15 April: suckling, 84; nursery, 66; grower/finisher, 216; sows/boars, 104 and 75 unknown. The total is up 26 from a week ago.

Once again, no new states reported a positive result in the last week and so the total affected remains at 17. Those states with 10 or more positive tests are: Iowa, 175; Oklahoma, 138; Kansas, 62; Minnesota, 42; North Carolina, 30; Indiana, 23, Colorado, 22 and Ohio, 15. Of these states, Oklahoma reported the highest number of new cases at 10.

In mid-June, the reporting system was adjusted. For the weeks prior to 16 June, laboratories were able to provide diagnostic case submissions and the number of premises testing positive for PEDv. Since 16 June, the data refer only to diagnostic cases submissions ('swine accessions').

Since the week of 16 June, the total number of swine accessions testing positive is 1,300, up from 1,229 the previous week (+71). The most-affected states are: Oklahoma, 436; Kansas, 345; North Carolina, 168; Iowa, 143; Ohio, 55; Minnesota, 49; Colorado, 47 and Indiana, 24. Other states, where positive, reported 20 positives or fewer.

In the most recent week reported (week of 25 August), the following states reported one or more positive results: Iowa (2), Indiana (2), Kansas (14), Minnesota (2), North Carolina (21), Ohio (2), Oklahoma (22) and Pennsylvania (6).
