CANADA & US - Addressing trade issues and opening new markets for agriculture were top priorities when Alberta’s Agriculture Minister attends a US legislators’ conference.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Verlyn Olson and Edmonton-McClung MLA David Xiao participated in the Council of State Governments (CSG) National Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, on 19 to 22 September 2013.

"The US is Alberta’s largest agricultural trading partner, with exports valued at $3 billion. This is a tremendous opportunity to promote the strengths of our agriculture sector, explore new trade and investment opportunities, and discuss key issues with US decision-makers," said Minister Olson.

The conference provides an important venue for Minister Olson to advocate for changes to the US mandatory country of origin labelling (COOL) requirements for beef and pork, which are resulting in added costs for the livestock industry on both sides of the border.

Alberta officials will also meet with US delegates to:

  • promote Alberta as a secure, reliable and responsible energy provider
  • emphasize Alberta’s actions and commitment to responsible environmental management
  • encourage greater economic cooperation and trade opportunities
  • CSG National includes elected and appointed members of US state and territorial governments. Alberta participates as an affiliate member on CSG National’s -international committee. MLA Xiao is Alberta’s CSG National representative.
