Classical Swine Fever Outbreak Affects Pigs in Russia

17 October 2013

RUSSIA - The Russian veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of classical swine fever, also known as hog cholera, in Amur oblast in the south-east of the country.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification yesterday (16 October).

The outbreak was initially observed on 16 September and confirmed on 23 September after a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test was conducted at the Primorskaya interregional veterinary laboratory.

Five pigs were found susceptible, and all five pigs were found to be affected by the outbreak.

The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.

The OIE, in conjunction with the country's veterinary authorities, have applied several measures to contain the situation.
