James O’Callaghan of WM Rigby and Son, Mike Davies of LKL Farming and Tony Wright of Shedden Farms all impressed the judges at interview, where they were asked to demonstrate how training is benefiting both their career and livestock performance on their unit.

BPEX skills manager Samantha Bowsher said: "The judges enjoyed meeting all six nominees for the award, who made a really strong group of candidates. They are a tribute to the hard work, enthusiasm and professionalism that runs throughout the pig industry."

The overall winner will be announced at an awards ceremony on 5 November 2013 at the House of Commons, where they will receive a cash prize, a training grant and an engraved trophy.

Last year’s winner, Piotr Wroblewski, used the £1000 training grant from sponsor Zoetis to continue his own career development, on the BPEX Stockman Plus course, as well as to fund training for staff in practical areas such as artificial insemination and veterinary and medicine use.

Mr Wroblewski said: "Skills and ideas learned on the training courses really helped us to improve service management, increase the number of pigs born alive and maintain it at a good level."
