Canadian Pig Group Welcomes Free Trade Deals

18 November 2013

CANADA - Manitoba Pork Council (MPC) has welcomed Canada's latest free trade agreements with the EU and Honduras, saying that open markets benefit everyone.

MPC applauds the Government of Canada for achieving an agreement with the European Union (EU) last month, allowing Canada to export 81,000 metric tonnes of pork tariff free, up from 6,000 metric tonnes.

Less than a month after the trade agreement with the EU, Honduras granted full market access to Canada’s pork and beef. All pork from federally-registered Canadian establishments can be sold into the Honduran market, since Honduras has approved Canada’s pork inspection and certification system. The trade agreement is expected to have a combined market value of C$5 to $7 million annually.

The Canadian government’s commitment to trade agreements is key to maintaining existing pork markets and opening up new ones.
