Ukraine Reports First Case of African Swine Fever

UKRAINE - The country has reported its first case of African Swine Fever (ASF).

The veterinary authority sent an Immediate Notification dated 8 January 2014 to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The report describes it as a clinical case, confirmed by laboratory analysis.

One wild boar was found on 6 January at the Pischane hunting ground at Stanychno-Luganskyi, in the region of Lugansk (Luhansk) in the far east of the country.

The report adds that the wild boar was found dead in the river four metres from the border with the Russian Federation that runs in the middle of the river.

Standard measures are being applied: control of wildlife reservoirs; quarantine; movement control inside the country; screening and zoning but no vaccination or treatment of affected animals.

ForUm reports that , according to the Veterinary Service, the last case of African Swine Fever in Ukraine was registered in 2012 in the Zaporizhya region.
