UK - If only one pig unit drops its defences and allows in African swine fever, the outcome will be the destruction of Britain's burgeoning pigmeat export trade, which at £350-million-a-year now accounts for around a quarter of producers' income.

The National Pig Association (NPA) reports that it will do everything possible to reduce the risk of ASF invading British pig units - but it will require the active support of all producers and allied trade members.

NPA's new 'Keep-Out-Disease' campaign will involve the production of leaflets and posters for use at border posts, and press releases to warn the public not to bring meat products into the country.

But further publicity will be essential, especially if airlines and airport operators prove reluctant to play their part - so with the help of members, NPA plans a return to its activist roots.

Scores of producers and allied trade volunteers will be needed to gather at key airports to display warning posters and distribute leaflets to passengers.

The industry cannot hope to influence more than a few hundred travellers individually - but it should be able to reach millions through the associated media coverage.
