Russia Reports First FMD Outbreak of 2014

RUSSIA - The first outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) has been reported in the country this year - in a mixed village herd of cattle, sheep, goats and pigs in the south-east of the country, near to the border with China, writes Jackie Linden.

The veterinary authority sent an Immediate Notification dated 12 February to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The outbreak started on 7 February at Starotsuruhaitui in the region of Zabajkal'skij Krai in south-east Russia, near the border with China.

Five cattle of a village herd of 724 animals were affected, five of them showing symptoms. Also in the village were 5,386 sheep and goats and 2,256 pigs but none of these animals showed symptoms.

The usual movement restrictions have been applied and 2,414 cattle have been vaccinated.

This is the first outbreak of FMD in the country since December 2013.
