New Collaboration Tackles PRRS in Spain

06 March 2014

SPAIN - The Centre de Recerca en Sanitat Animal (CReSA) and its partners have launched ConPRRS, a new platform on Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS).

ConPRRS is an integral and independent group with a contrasted experience in PRRS, including controlling the disease, with the aim of enhancing the image and competitiveness of the pig sector, according to CReSA.

PRRS is one of the diseases with a higher impact in the health, production and economy within the porcine population. It is estimated that an outbreak of PRRS costs about €160 per sow and that in an endemic situation, the loss approaches an average of €80 per sow and year.

CReSA, the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the Universitat de Lleida have created a technical group for supporting the PRRS control, ConPRRS.

The aim of this initiative is that all the most current scientific knowledge – including diagnostics, biosafety assessments, epidemiology and a consultancy on the applicable measures for each case – for locally or regionally controlling the PRRS is available to companies, ADS (a PR group) and public administration, as well as to offer education to veterinarians and all the people that participate in the programmes for controlling the disease.

All the information obtained with ConPRRS  - diagnostics, epidemiology data, productive data, tests conducted, etc. - will be offered with a full transparency guarantee, all along the process while keeping the confidentiality of the data obtained.

The main objectives of ConPRRS are to contribute to the enhancement of the good image and competitiveness of the pork sector and to generate new knowledge that may be used for solving practical problems in the control of PRRS.

ConPRRS is an initiative which benefits from the independent support of four companies with recognised experience in PRRS, namely Hipra, Merial, MSD and SYVA.
