Nutritionist to Discuss Potential of Insects in Pig Feed

20 June 2014

British Pig Executive

UK - By 2020, we could be feeding insects and algae to pigs, says Mick Hazzledine of Premier Nutrition. At the BPEX Innovation Conference next week, he will present some alternative feed ingredients including insect meal, algae, peas, beans and yeast.

Mick Hazzledine will analyse the nutritional potential and practicalities of these raw materials and give a verdict on which options pig producers are most likely to be feeding in a few years’ time.

The potential of plant breeders to help with pig nutrition is also on the agenda. Chris Tapsell of KWS UK Ltd will discuss opportunities to move away from feed crops as commodities and breed crops to add value and benefit for feed producers.

He said: “If suitable relationships can be developed between producers, feed companies and breeders, we can develop the breeding targets together and establish a supply chain where added value is shared appropriately.”

The conference will showcase the future of pig feeding and data recording and is being held on Tuesday 24 June at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire from 09:45 to 17:00, with lunch and refreshments provided.
