The Saskatchewan Swine On-Farm Biosecurity programme is a Growing Forward 2 programme funded by the governments of Canada and Saskatchewan with the goal of improving biosecurity practices on farm.

The programme provides funding for a veterinary visit between 1 February and 30 June 2014 and up to one thousand dollars for biosecurity related supplies, equipment and modifications.

Harvey Wagner, the manager of producer services with the Saskatchewan Pork Development Board, says because the programme has to be wrapped up by the end of July vet visits and equipment purchases must be completed by 30 June.

Actually there's two components to the veterinary visit.

One is under the first part of the Saskatchewan Swine On-Farm Biosecurity programme which is funded by the provincial government.

Then there's a second visit that's going to be funded as a cost sharing by Sask Pork and that one wraps up before the end of the year so we're actually going to see two visits on farm that'll be covered that deal with a biosecurity component.

It's derived encouragement for producers to have a good conversation and review of their farm biosecurity processes with their veterinarian to try and limit the spread of incursion.

It's particularly aimed right now, we're very concerned about PED, Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea and we want to try and prevent it entering Saskatchewan farms.

We've been very fortunate so far that we haven't seen any PED on any Saskatchewan farms so far but we'd certainly like to keep it that way.

Mr Wagner stresses the first veterinary visit and equipment purchases must be done in the window of 1 February to 30 June 2014 and applications for the programme must be received by 15 July.
