Alleged Pig Neglect on State Farm

18 July 2014

SOUTH AFRICA - Pigs at a state-owned farm near Hartbeesfontein have been mistreated, the DA claimed.

Citing City Press, reports that a DA councillor was allegedly giving the pigs food and water through a hole in the wall, DA provincial leader Chris Hattingh said.

The action was taken after they were told that the pigs had been without water and food for "quite some time".

"Another two pigs in the pen were already dead and were being eaten by the surviving pigs," Mr Hattingh was quoted as saying.

The pigs have since been removed by the SPCA, Mr Hattingh confirmed.

The state-owned farm was reportedly used for local economic development, with Mr Hattingh claiming that millions had been spent on the initiative but that "novice farmers are left mostly to themselves".

According to, the latest incident comes just over a week after NCOP chairperson and ANC member Thandi Modise's animal farm was in the spotlight.

Officials visited Ms Modise's farm and found that animals had been left without food and water for almost two weeks, with over 50 dead pigs.

The dead pigs were being eaten by the remaining pigs.

Ms Modise said that she had appointed a replacement manager after the regular manager had to take a leave of absence.

She said it came as a surprise to learn from news footage that the replacement manager had deserted the farm.
