PED-Positive Farm Samples in US: 7,801

US - The total number of pig farm samples that have tested positive for the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) virus now stands at 7,801 in 30 states, writes Jackie Linden. There were 79 new positive samples in the most recent week reported.

The National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) reports reports 79 positive accessions out of 792 tested at nine veterinary diagnostic labs for the week ending 19 July, according to the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV).

The number of states reported to the NAHLN as having at least one confirmed case of PED remains at 30.

Pig Farm Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 7,801

The total number of pig farm samples (termed 'laboratory biological accessions' in the official report) that have tested positive for the PED virus (PEDv) since April 2013 now stands at 7,801, which includes 79 for the most recent week and 240 for the month of July so far.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 26,130 farm samples have been tested, of which 26 per cent have tested positive for the virus.

Results by age class

Suckling pigs

For the current month to date, 310 farms have been tested, of which 54 samples or 17 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 3,679 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,705 samples or 41 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Nursery pigs

For the current month to date, 271 farms have been tested, of which 35 samples or 13 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 3,961 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,392 samples or 32 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Grower/finisher pigs

For the current month to date, 322 farms have been tested, of which 23 samples or 7.1 per cent were positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 4,485 farm samples have been tested, of which 1,377 samples or 24 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Sows and boars

For the current month to date, 167 farms have been tested, of which 10 samples or 6.0 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 2,251 farm samples have been tested, of which 644 samples or 21 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Unknown age class

For the current month to date, 1,155 farms have been tested, of which 120 samples or 10 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 12,686 farm samples have been tested, of which 2,875 samples or 22 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Results by state

According to AASV, the total number of states remains at 30.

The total number of positive accessions on this report (up to the week of 13 July) is 7,801, 79 more than the previous week.

Those states with 100 or more positive tests are: Iowa, 2,177; Minnesota, 1,292; Illinois, 850; North Carolina, 772; Oklahoma, 423; Indiana, 412; Ohio, 348; Kansas, 273; Missouri, 262; Michigan, 204; Nebraska, 181 and South Dakota, 117.

For the most recent week (week of 13 July), the states reporting the most new positive tests were Illinois and Minnesota, each with 12, followed by Iowa with 10.

Also reporting one or more positive results were Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming.

Pig Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 29,547

The total number of swine samples (termed 'biological samples' in the official report) since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 29,547.

For the current month to date, 16,195 samples have been tested, of which 1,078 samples or 6.7 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 146,304 samples have been tested, of which 18 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Environmental Samples Testing Positive for PEDv: 6,656

The total number of environmental samples testing positive since testing began in June 2013 now stands at 6,656.

For the current month to date, 2,300 samples have been tested, of which 233 or 10 per cent tested positive for PEDv.

Since testing was fully reported in November 2013, 28,612 samples have been tested, of which 21 per cent tested positive.
