Germany's milk industry association, milk exporters' association and German Meat GmbH have opened a joint representative office in Beijing, reports the German meat association, VDF. The office has received financial support from the national agriculture ministry to help promote German food exports.

During his recent visit to China with the heads of the export union, Karin Monke, and German Meat, Steffen Reiter, Germany's agriculture secretary, Peter Bleser expressed his pleasure that the project had been achieved.

China is the world's largest market for imported milk products. This fact makes it all the more important to have a presence in the country to secure communications between exporters, importers and China's importing authority.

Germany delivers large amounts of whey products, children's foods, milk powder and, increasingly, liquid milk to China.

The Chinese authorities have recently begun to draw up a list of approved export companies based on local inspection. The new German office in Beijing will also be able to assist in this process.

Mr Reiter said that China is also one of the most important export markets for pig meat. For some time, only individual German processing companies have been authorised to export to China and even then, only for restricted products.

With the office in Beijing, Germany will be in a better position to support the approval process for further companies and pork products as well as sausages, poultry meat and beef, he said.

He added that it will also improve the understanding of China's regulations and regulatory processes for the import of food products and smooth the information flow in both directions.
