The company that will initially employ 380 workers will see investment of €16 million in new equipment.

Last week, the Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic attended the hand over the keys of the meat plant to the new owner.

Mr Vucic said that production should begin in early July, and stressed that the ultimate goal is for the factory to have more than 1,000 employees, to invest more than €20 million in new equipment and that its products will be exported to Russia and China.

He said that the arrival of Gierlinger Holding was extremely important for the city of Sremska Mitrovica, Vojvodina and Serbia, because Mitros, which has a strong reputation in Serbia will now operate on a sound basis.

Mitros bacon and sausages will be available on Serbian shelves from September, he said and he said that Gierlinger Holding will cooperate with the German company Tönnies Fleisch, whose representatives are already looking for land to build a pig farm, which would further increase the production at Mitros.

According to Mr Vucic, this will further increase production and help Serbian farmers to produce more and have a secure market.

Owner of Gierlinger Holding Johann Gierlinger said that Serbia is an ideal place for investment because it has the primarily raw materials as well as other conditions for investment.

Mr Gierlinger said that Gierlinger Holding has production plants in Romania and Hungary, and sells and exports its products to the European Union and the Russian Federation.

The keys of Mitros were presented to the new owner by Mayor of Sremska Mitrovica Branislav Nedimovic.
