CANADA - The Canadian Pork Council is encouraging the leaders of Canada's political parties and the candidates running for election to take a stand for the future of Canadian hog production, writes Bruce Cochrane.

The Canadian Pork Council has released its 2015 Canadian Pork Industry Platform for the 2015 Federal Election.

Canadian Pork Council chair Rick Bergmann says the document outlines key industry concerns and is intended to stimulate dialogue and build awareness.

Rick Bergmann-Canadian Pork Council Canadian Pork Council:

The big umbrella is building a stronger future for our industry here in Canada.

Underneath that umbrella there is a whole gambit of different priorities.

I'll mention a few of them.

Certainly risk management programs to help us through the challenging years, things like trade and biosecurity, animal health, enabling or ensuring that we have a strong work force for the future as well, so these are a few of the things that would be considered priority items within the document.

It's critically important that producers do take this upon themselves to have a visit with those who want to be in government in their areas to ensure that our message is being heard at the grassroots level.

We have a great relationship within Ottawa and, that said, our membership are across the country in many regions and it's great when they can have a local conversation with the MPs and the people in leadership in those areas to ensure that our message is being heard across the country in different ways.

Mr Bergmann says we have an opportunity with the membership across the county to help everybody become more aware of the industry, the needs that it has and its past successes.

He anticipates good discussion to result from the document that has just been released.
