CME: Barrow and Gilt Weights Below Last Year's Levels

02 November 2016

US - The hog industry has experienced a significant increase in slaughter numbers compared to 2015, up almost 2 per cent to date compared to last year., according to Daily Livestock Report is published by Steiner Consulting Group, DLR Division, Inc.

Pork production is only up 1 per cent year-over-year so far however, and this is attributed to dressed barrow and gilt weights staying in check.

On average in 2016 barrow and gilt dressed weights have tracked about one pound below year ago levels on a weekly basis. The industry has done a good job managing these weights in the face of a forecast 2 per cent increase in annual hog slaughter.
