SPP Up for Tenth Consecutive Week

UK - The EU-spec SPP rose for the tenth consecutive week, to hit the highest level since August 2014 in the week ending 6 May, with shortages reported especially for the fresh market, reports Millie Askew, AHDB Analyst.

At 157.82p/kg the current quote is 1.29p up week on week and more than 43p higher than the same week in 2016.

Despite the Bank Holiday some plants worked on the Monday and so in the week ending 6 May estimated throughputs were actually 1 per cent higher week on week.

Nonetheless, compared to the same period in 2016, throughputs were 5 per cent lower.

Average carcase weights also fell back slightly (50g) on the week to 83.58kg, with the average probe measurement also decreasing by 0.1mm to 10.9mm.

In the week ending 29 April, the EU-spec APP also hit the highest level since August 2014.

At 159.53p/kg the current quote is 0.5p up on the week and over 42p higher than the same point last year. The gap between the APP and SPP now stands at 3.0p/kg.

In the week ending 6 May, 30kg weaner prices were reported at £58.83/head. A weekly change is not available, as a price was not published in the week ending 29 April.

However, compared to the same week in 2016 the current quote is over £20 higher. In the week ending 6 May, 7kg weaner prices were at the highest level for this series since June 2014.

At £41.22/t, the current quote is 21p higher than the previous week and £12.21/head more than the corresponding period last year.
