OIE: Ukraine Reports African Swine Fever Outbreak in Dnipro

UKRAINE - Dr Andrii Zhuk, First Deputy Head of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Production, has reported an outbreak of African swine fever in the city of Dnipro.

An immediate notification was sent to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) on 17 August. The outbreak first occurred on 14 August and later confirmed (16 August) after a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test was carried out at the State Scientific and Research Institute on Laboratory Diagnosis and Veterinary and Sanitary Expertise.

The OIE reports that the affected population consists of two backyard pigs. The animals were found dead as a result of beinf affected by the the ASF virus.

The OIE, in conjunction with the country's veterinary authorities, have applied several control measures, some of which include:

  • Movement control inside the country
  • Surveillance within containment and/or protection zone
  • Traceability
  • Quarantine
  • Official destruction of animal products
  • Official disposal of carcasses, by-products and waste
  • Control of wildlife reservoirs
  • Zoning
  • Disinfection
  • Disinfestation
  • Ante- and post-mortem inspections
  • Vaccination has been permitted (if a vaccine exists)
  • No treatment of affected animals
