With renewed access to Argentinian trade, it is expected that the Canadian pork industry will leap to an export value of up to $16 million annually.

In 2002, Argentina suspended Canadian processors' export eligibility on the basis of several import requirement violations; the beta-agonist growth promoter, ractopamine, was found in a number of pork samples.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Argentina last year where it was reported that both the Canadian and Argentinian leaders acknowledged the progress to date in attaining export standards and in delivering a renewed trade agreement.

Lawrence MacAulay said in a news release:

This market access will deepen Canada’s trade partnership with Argentina, boost global exports, and strengthen the middle class.

François-Philippe Champagne also spoke of the value of the partnership:

Canadian pork access to the Argentinian market is an important step in our valued and growing relationship and evidence that engagement produces results. I encourage our Canadian pork industry to take advantage of the opportunities this leading South American market offers.
